New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music toured Kansas in 2008.  The Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition explored the many genres of roots music that combine to form America's Soundtrack:  blues, country, gospel, bluegrass, zydeco, tejano, klezmer, and many more unique American musical styles.

Visitors to New Harmonies experienced the history of roots music from early Native American music to the 1960s folk revival through artifacts, photographs, and music samples from the Smithsonian Institution's collections.  Hands-on stations invited visitors to play spoons, pluck a diddley bow, or stop and experience the music of artists such as Country legend Jimmie Rodgers and Gospel great Mahalia Jackson.
