The Kansas Humanities Council is the only organization in Kansas solely dedicated to promoting the humanities as a public resource for all Kansans. For 40 years, KHC has been a partner and advocate for the cultural life of the state. KHC encourages communities to view their libraries, museums, arts centers, senior centers, and local service clubs as forums for ideas. Through programs and grant opportunities, KHC clarifies the connection between history, literature, ethics, and culture and the daily decisions that Kansans make on the job, at home, and in their civic life.
KHC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization governed by a 22-member Board of Directors. KHC is an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities and is not a state agency. Funding is provided by NEH, the State of Kansas, and private gifts.

Your Step-by-Step Guide to Applying for a Kansas Humanities Council Spring Grant
1. Contact KHC's Murl Riedel to share your idea or ask for help. He'll walk you through the guidelines or help you clarify the humanities part of your idea.
2. Talk to a consultant -- someone who has done a similar project, has expertise on the topic, is familiar with the equipment you might need, or can offer hands-on training. Murl can help you identify the right person to contact.
3. Figure out the "who, what, when, where, why, and how" of your idea. Who's involved in this project? Who will be in charge of the money? What do you want to do? When? Where will it happen? Why is this project important to your community? How will you make it happen?
4. What will it cost? KHC funds can often pay for special project staff, special speakers, discussion leader, project materials, and publicity support. Fair warning: You'll need to be specific with your numbers. Ballpark estimates make grant reviewers nervous.
5. Submit a draft. Review the KHC grant guidelines and questions. By February 1, fill in as many blanks as you can and send Murl a draft of your final proposal. Murl will review your draft and send you suggestions on how to make your proposal more competitive during the grant process. You'll decide the changes you want to make. Extensions are allowed.
6. Submit your final application. Submit a final application to KHC by February 29. Extensions are not allowed.
