Kansas Tour
March 14 - December 28, 2008
The Kansas Humanities Council is sponsoring a special Kansas tour
of the Smithsonian Institution exhibition, New Harmonies:
Celebrating American Roots Music.
New Harmonies explores the music that is America's Soundtrack:
roots music. The Blues, country, gospel, bluegrass, zydeco, tejano,
and klezmer are just some of the many unique American musical styles
featured in the exhibit.
Experience the history of roots music beginning with early Native
American music through the 1960s folk revival. Artifacts, photographs,
and music samples from the Smithsonian Institution's collections
guide you on your musical journey. See photographs of musicians
and learn about their contributions to roots music. Try your hand
at playing spoons or pluck a diddley bow. Stop at a listening station
to hear the music of Country legend Jimmie Rodgers, Gospel great
Mahalia Jackson, Tejano artist Narcisco Martinez, or "Chicago's
Polka King," Li'l Wally Jagiello.
