Why Chautauqua?

Kansas Chautauqua Benefits Kansans

The Kansas Humanities Council is committed to helping Kansans deepen our understanding of our history as Kansans and Americans. Through Kansas Chautauqua, KHC met five Council goals:

Education: To ensure that Kansans and visitors learn more about our history and values and how the struggle for freedom fought for in 19th-century Kansas continues into the present time.

Interpretation: To create programs and activities that have historic integrity and provide authentic learning experiences.

Commemoration: To recognize the sacrifices and tough personal choices made by the people engaged in the battle for the Kansas Territory.

National Attention: To draw national attention to Kansas during the sesquicentennial by providing a heritage tourism destination product.

Legacy: To build program and financial partnerships that will sustain Kansas Chautauqua as a recurring program.

Celebrating the 150th Anniversary:

  • Helped Kansans better understand their history and heritage
  • Contributed to the state’s image as a leader in the struggle for freedom
  • Reminded America of Kansas’ central role in our country’s history
  • Capitalized on a growing heritage tourism market by bringing visitors to the state and local communities
  • Created opportunities for "family-friendly" educational and fun learning experiences
  • Capitalized on national and international interest in Civil War history to bring more visitors to museums, historic sites, interpretive centers, and parks in Kansas.
