Expectations of Board Membership
The KHC board is a working board in a very real sense, one that
depends on the expertise of every member. Members engage in
strategic planning, setting goals and objectives, review grant proposals,
serve on standing committee, and oversee KHC-conducted programs
and special projects.
Council members serve as a vital link between KHC and the public.
They attend KHC sponsored projects, representing the Council
and evaluating the quality of funded programs. This service
gives members a chance to meet humanities scholars around the state
and become acquainted with community groups and cultural organizations
that share KHC's interest in the state's cultural life. They also
serve as liaisons between groups seeking funding and the Council's
staff.
As advocates for the humanities in public life, members represent
the Council's interest before elected officials at the state and
federal level. They help make the case for public funding for
the humanities.
The full board meets three times a year, typically March, June,
and November. Meetings are usually two days, running from noon on
Thursday through Friday afternoon. Thursday afternoon is set aside
for meetings of the executive or standing committees; Friday is
the business meeting of the full board. Meetings are held in various
locations around the state; dates and locations are announced well
in advance.
