Kansas Humanities Council Awards Spring Grants

TOPEKA - The Kansas Humanities Council recently awarded $24,324
in Humanities and Heritage grants to four organizations.
Friends of the Kaw, Lawrence ($9,180)
Life on the Kaw
“Life on the Kaw” is a humanities component of the Friends
of the Kaw website. The new feature will connect the Kansas River
to history, poetry, literature, and archaeology. Laura Calwell,

Lone Chimney Films, Andover ($5,000)
Bloody Dawn: The Lawrence Massacre
A documentary chronicling William Quantrill’s 1863 raid on
Lawrence, featuring commentary and analysis by history scholars.

Smoky Valley Historical Society, Lindsborg ($3,452)
Smoky Valley Oral History Transcription/Cataloging/Indexing
A project to transcribe approximately sixty-four oral history interviews
conducted between 1981 and 1989. The interviewees shared memories
of the early 1900s, and many were members of Swedish pioneer families.

Votaw Colony Museum, Inc., Coffeyville ($6,692)
Reconnection II
A public history event in Kansas City, Kansas designed to reconnect
descendents of African American colonies, Exodusters and Liberian
immigrants. The event features humanities scholars leading workshops
on African American history topics. Nat Fitz, project director.
A non-profit organization with 35 years experience, the Kansas Humanities
Council conducts and supports community-based programs, serves as
a financial resource through an active grant-making program, and
encourages Kansans to participate in their communities. For more
