Martin & Osa Johnson Safari Museum Receives KHC Grant

Date: December 15, 2006

TOPEKA –The Kansas Humanities Council awarded $2,952 to the Martin & Osa Johnson Safari Museum, Chanute, in support of Celebrating Cinematic Quests.

Scheduled for April 14, 2007, Celebrating Cinematic Quests is an annual event celebrating the lives of early adventurers, Osa and Martin Johnson. This year’s theme examines the role of the travelogue. How did these early action movies influence popular culture and social perspectives? The program features the films “African Paradise” and “King Solomon’s Mines.” In addition, Dr. Karen Ray, Washburn University, will present a first-person portrayal of Osa Johnson; Dr. Lori Jones, an ethnomedial anthropologist from Wichita, will examine the impact of these travelogues on Amerca’s impression of Africa; and Dr. John Tibbetts, University of Kansas, will explore the relationship between the documentary films produced by the Johnsons and the development of cinema in America.

Jackie Borgeson, museum curator and educator, serves as the project director. For a complete schedule of events call 620/431-2730 or visit online at www.safarimuseum.com.
