Martin & Osa Johnson Safari Museum Receives
KHC Grant

TOPEKA –The Kansas Humanities Council awarded $2,952 to the
Martin & Osa Johnson Safari Museum, Chanute, in support of Celebrating
Cinematic Quests.
Scheduled for April 14, 2007, Celebrating Cinematic Quests
is an annual event celebrating the lives of early adventurers, Osa
and Martin Johnson. This year’s theme examines the role of
the travelogue. How did these early action movies influence popular
culture and social perspectives? The program features the films
“African Paradise” and “King Solomon’s Mines.”
In addition, Dr. Karen Ray, Washburn University, will present a
first-person portrayal of Osa Johnson; Dr. Lori Jones, an ethnomedial
anthropologist from Wichita, will examine the impact of these travelogues
on Amerca’s impression of Africa; and Dr. John Tibbetts, University
of Kansas, will explore the relationship between the documentary
films produced by the Johnsons and the development of cinema in
America.
