Civil War on the Western Frontier Event Receives

TOPEKA – The Kansas Humanities Council awarded $2,000 to
the Watkins Community Museum of History in support of Civil
War on the Western Frontier, an annual event commemorating
Lawrence’s fiery history during the years 1854-1865.
This year’s event scheduled for August 10-21, 2006, includes
first-person portrayals, discussions, guided tours, hands-on workshops,
and other events. Featured speakers include James Marten, professor
of History at Marquette University discussing the effects of the
Civil War on children; James Horton, professor of History at George
Washington University discussing the interracial alliances of the
Underground Railroad; and Bill Keel, professor of Germanic Languages
at the University of Kansas, discussing the role Germans played
in the abolitionist movement in Kansas.
Rebecca Phipps, director of the Watkins Community Museum of History,
