Civil War on the Western Frontier Event Receives KHC Funding

TOPEKA – The Kansas Humanities Council awarded $2,000 to the Watkins Community Museum of History in support of Civil War on the Western Frontier, an annual event commemorating Lawrence’s fiery history during the years 1854-1865.

This year’s event scheduled for August 10-21, 2006, includes first-person portrayals, discussions, guided tours, hands-on workshops, and other events. Featured speakers include James Marten, professor of History at Marquette University discussing the effects of the Civil War on children; James Horton, professor of History at George Washington University discussing the interracial alliances of the Underground Railroad; and Bill Keel, professor of Germanic Languages at the University of Kansas, discussing the role Germans played in the abolitionist movement in Kansas.
