Black Jack Battlefield Receives Grant for Anniversary
Event
Date: May 11, 2006
TOPEKA - The Kansas Humanities Council awarded $3,152 to the Black
Jack Battlefield Trust in support of the two-day Sesquicentennial
event commemorating the Battle of Back Jack.
Located near Baldwin City, the Battle of Black Jack is considered
by many as the site of the first armed conflict over the issue of
slavery. In recognition of its importance in better understanding
American history, a full schedule of events is planned for June
2-3. Programs include a first-person portrayal of August Bondi,
an abolitionist who fought beside John Brown, by Dr. William Worley,
professor of History at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
In addition, Arnold Schofield, executive director of the Mine Creek
Battlefield, will portray John Brown. The John Brown program is
scheduled for 7:30 PM on June 2. The August Bondi program is scheduled
for 9:00 AM on June 3.
Diane Niehoff serves as the project director. For a complete schedule
of events visit online at www.blackjackbattlefield.org.
A non-profit cultural organization with 30 years experience, the
Kansas Humanities Council conducts and supports community-based
programs, serves as a financial resource through an active grantmaking
program, and encourages Kansans to participate in their communities.
