Kansas Department of Corrections Receives Grant
for Reading Series
Date: January 30, 2006
The Kansas Humanities Council awarded $3,300 to the Kansas Department
of Corrections in support of “Read to Me.”
“Read to Me” is a project to support inmates who wish
to strengthen and maintain relationships with their children as
they serve their sentence, while promoting literacy and the use
of literature to do so.
Six workshops with a humanities scholar will assist incarcerated
parents at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility in learning interactive
techniques for reading aloud and asking content-rich questions,
how to choose age-appropriate books for their children, and how
to personalize the experience of reading aloud on videotape.
At the end of the workshops, each inmate will read the selected
children’s book on tape, and pose questions highlighting the
humanities themes contained within the book. The videotape and the
book will then be mailed home for the family to enjoy.
Roger Haden, Deputy Secretary Programs Division, serves as project
director for the series. For more information about "Read to
Me” call 785/296-0460.
A non-profit cultural organization with 30 years experience, the
