Exhibit in 2008
Date: July 9, 2007
TOPEKA - The Smithsonian is coming to Kansas! New Harmonies:
Celebrating American Roots Music is the latest exhibit
to tour Kansas as part of the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main
Street project, offered through the Kansas Humanities Council. New
Harmonies makes its Kansas debut in Winfield in March 2008 and travels
to Russell, Lawrence, Independence, McPherson, and Atchison through
December 2008.
New Harmonies tells America’s musical history
from early Native American music to the folk revival of the 1960s.
The exhibit shows how the intersection of diverse cultures formed
America’s musical foundation, known as roots music. Country,
Blues, Gospel, Zydeco and Tejano are among the many roots music
styles featured in the exhibit. Photographs, musical artifacts,
and listening stations bring the musical story to life.
The 2008 New Harmonies Kansas tour schedule is
