Six Kansas Communities to Host Smithsonian Exhibit in 2008

Date: July 9, 2007

TOPEKA - The Smithsonian is coming to Kansas! New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music is the latest exhibit to tour Kansas as part of the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street project, offered through the Kansas Humanities Council. New Harmonies makes its Kansas debut in Winfield in March 2008 and travels to Russell, Lawrence, Independence, McPherson, and Atchison through December 2008.

New Harmonies tells America’s musical history from early Native American music to the folk revival of the 1960s. The exhibit shows how the intersection of diverse cultures formed America’s musical foundation, known as roots music. Country, Blues, Gospel, Zydeco and Tejano are among the many roots music styles featured in the exhibit. Photographs, musical artifacts, and listening stations bring the musical story to life.

The 2008 New Harmonies Kansas tour schedule is as follows:

Winfield, Winfield Public Library, March 21–May 4
Russell, Deines Cultural Center, May 9–June 22
Lawrence, Watkins Community Museum of History, June 27–August 10
Independence, Independence Historical Museum, August 15-September 28
McPherson, McPherson Museum, October 3-November 9
Atchison, Atchison County Historical Museum, November 14-December 28

New Harmonies is part of the Museum on Main Street project, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and the Federation of State Humanities Councils. Support for Museum on Main Street has been provided by the United States Congress.

The Kansas Humanities Council sponsors New Harmonies in Kansas. A non-profit organization with 35 years experience, the Kansas Humanities Council conducts and supports community-based programs, serves as a financial resource through an active grant-making program, and encourages Kansans to participate in their communities.
